A favorite hangout in Hydra since the distant and romantic 1994, Caprice lands Italian cuisine on the bright island of the Saronic Gulf and enriches it with local ingredients, local fish and unique combinations. Hidden behind the harbor in a beautiful picturesque alley with bougainvilleas, hospitable, unpretentious and with deep gastronomic superiority, Caprice competes worthily with the trattorias of the land of Caesars, gondoliers and myths, writing its own unique history to the Greek and foreign visitors mingling at its tables.
Caprice’s cuisine creates a bridge between tradition and the now, makes pizza with thin dough that matures for hours, ties its risotti to perfection and roasts dream tagliatas, garnishing them with coarse salt and ribeye with a velvety mustard butter. The menu certainly does not lack pasta, which here experiences ideal versions, with options such as the insurmountable linguini with truffle, the shrimp talionini that are sizzled with sabouca or the fresh ravioli with ricotta. The salad with lentils is particularly refined and delicious, while its appetizers are all time classic, such as the invigorating prosciutto-melon or seals with cherry tomatoes and basil oil, that triumphs in its simplicity.
The place where the restaurant is today was a warehouse of the owner’s grandfather’s sponge shop, and it retains its uniqueness with genuine nautical paintings, tools from the beginning of the last century, relics that narrate the nautical past of the island, giving a dynamic present and creating a wonderful intimacy to every visitor. The courtyard is also adorned with a trawl, while the bell tower of the adjacent church stands proudly above the outside.
Every day new dishes spring up – depending on the season and the goods that the seabed of the island and the land offer – while the list of wines is duly excellent with choices in Greek and foreign vineyards. For the sweet finale, do not forget to enjoy the cool panakota or the instant tiramisu.
