Milos: An island beyond the ordinary

The motley of its landscapes but also the beauty that it radiates from end to end, are the elements that can satisfy even the most demanding visitor. Milos is famous for its lacy beaches. With over 75 small and large beaches, with crystal clear blue waters, colorful carved rocks and white gold beaches, you are sure to be thrilled.

Due to the volcanic origin of its soil, Milos has an impressive morphology and variety of beaches. You will sometimes find beaches with white gold beaches and sometimes bays with pebbles surrounded by stones, white, red, yellow or even black rocks. You will find unique colors and depths in the sea, while you can also swim in fully organized beaches or choose more lonely and wild. What is certain is that the clear waters of the island and its infinitely beautiful beaches will offer you an unprecedented experience.

    Adamantas

Adamas is one of the largest natural ports in the Mediterranean, a fact that in combination with the extraction of many types of minerals helped the great development of the island in antiquity. The port of Milos was built in 1835 by Sfakians from Crete, who arrived there after a failed attempt against the Turks. It is the tourist center of the island, but without losing the picturesqueness of an island coastal village with its cobbled streets. It houses many public services which also serve the residents of Kimolos. Very frequent ferry services connect Milos with Kimolos, which is only half an hour away from the island of Aphrodite. The Mining and Ecclesiastical Museum are located in the port of Adamas.

    Plaka

Plaka is the capital of the island. It is built on a plateau located at 220 meters above sea level. The original island architecture, the picturesque cobbled alleys, the balconies full of flowers and the whitewashed courtyards, but mainly the wonderful view to the bay of Milos is a combination of rare beauty for Plaka. There are two museums on the island: the Archaeological and the Folklore. Also of exceptional beauty is the castle, which is located around the city. There, on the foundations of a very old church that was blown up by the Germans, is built the church of the Assumption of the Virgin. Right next to Plaka you will find another smaller but equally picturesque village, Plakes.

    Tripiti

Leaving Plaka behind us, we meet Tripiti, a traditional village that together with Plaka share the view of the bay of Milos. What will attract your attention are the graphic windmills, a trademark of Tripiti. There is also the Holy Church of Agios Nikolaos. Nearby from Tripiti are the catacombs of the first Christian years, discovered in 1843 and are a very important find worldwide. They were a place of worship and burial from the 1st to the end of the 5th century AD. It is a complex of three main catacombs that are divided into many small and large underground corridors occupying a total length of 200 meters. The place is open to visitors every day, except Monday.

    Klima

Klima is a small seaside fishing village with few inhabitants whose main feature is the “wires”. The “wires” are small houses in which the inhabitants keep their boats during the winter period. The role of “wires” changes in the summer and for many it becomes a holiday home. In a cave located in a field, very close to Klima, was found in 1820 the headless statue of Aphrodite of Milos. Immediately after, the head was found and all together it was a gift to Louis XVI. This is the reason for the existence of the statue in the Louvre Museum in France.

    Zefiria

This picturesque fishing village is built on a beautiful natural creek. Its beauty is a magnet for tourists who find many taverns, cafes and restaurants there. From the port of the village there are itineraries to Kimolos. Zefyria With only about 150 inhabitants, Zefyria, located 9 km southeast of Plaka, was the first capital of the island. There you can visit the Church of Panagia Portaitissa, which was built in the 17th century and was the old Diocese of Milos.

    Kleftiko

They stand on the edge of the southwestern side of the island and are also called “Sea Meteora”. As the name describes, these are huge and circular boulders that protrude from the sea while located a short distance from the beach. There are caves between the rocks. On the rocks are preserved carved bollards, remnants of pirates lurking at that point to attack or hide.

The beaches of Milos, however, are the real protagonist of your vacation on the island. The special geological characteristics of Milos have given a special morphology to the approximately 70 beaches. Strange formations, rocks that cast their shadow on the beach, caves where you can swim, unique colors of water and stone satisfy and excite even the difficult visitors of Milos. In some you can go by road, in others you can only be found by sea.

Hivadolimni is located 11.5 km south of Plaka and is probably the most beautiful beach of Milos. It is named after the large number of clams found at its bottom. Thermal baths (signs of the existence of an ancient volcano) can be found in Provatas, Aliki, Rivari and Kastanas. Papafragas is impressive, the same goes for Sarakiniko which for many is the best beach due to the white rocks and the clear blue waters. Near Adamas the sandy beaches of Lagada and Papikinou.

    The Sarakiniko

Flavors that you should not miss is the traditional dragee that can also be offered at weddings but is prepared by adding honey, sugar and almonds to the finely chopped white sweet zucchini crumb. More difficult to find are the sweet spinach pies and the “flouns” that contain raisins and are syruped. From the “camp” of savory flavors, the main representative is the pitarakia, which are fried cheese pies filled with maleot xerotyri, mint and onion. If you can try the “garlic noodles” which is exactly what its title says, you should consider yourself very lucky. You will be lucky if you choose Milos as a destination for your vacation!
